Candida is a yeast that normally lives on your skin and in your gut and vagina. This test looks for antibodies, proteins your immune system makes, that show your body has reacted to it.
Vaginal yeast infections are very common, and some women get them again and again. Many healthy people carry these antibodies, so this blood test can’t show whether a current infection is from yeast; a swab is the usual way to check. Frequent yeast infections can sometimes be linked to high blood sugar.
High Candida albicans IgG may mean your immune system has reacted to this yeast, now or in the past. Candida can live on healthy skin and in the gut and vagina, so many healthy people can carry these antibodies. That is why this result can't tell you whether a current infection comes from yeast, and a swab may be a better check. Vaginal yeast infections can cause itching, burning or thick discharge. If they keep coming back, a clinician may look at your blood sugar and, rarely, at how your immune system is working (immune deficiency).
Low or negative Candida albicans IgG may mean your immune system has made little antibody against this yeast. It can't rule out a yeast infection on its own, because a vaginal or skin infection may not raise antibodies in the blood. People with weakened immune systems may also make fewer antibodies, which can make the result hard to read. If you notice itching, burning or unusual discharge, a clinician may use a swab to check for yeast directly, whatever this result says.
