What it measures

Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is a substance your cells use to make energy. Your body makes its own, and levels can fall with age.

Why it matters for women

CoQ10 often comes up in talk about energy and fertility, but research on both is still early, and testing isn’t routine. Your level can be lower if you take a statin, a medicine that lowers cholesterol.

You might check it if…

  • you take a statin, a medicine that lowers cholesterol
  • you want a fuller picture as part of a nutrient check
  • a doctor asked you to check your level

What your result may mean

High Coenzyme Q10: what it may mean

High CoQ10 may mean you take a CoQ10 or ubiquinol supplement, which can raise blood levels well above your usual baseline. Because CoQ10 can travel in the blood with LDL cholesterol, high cholesterol can raise the reading too. A high value from supplements may not be a concern on its own, though some people may notice mild stomach upset from them. CoQ10 can come up in talk about energy and fertility, but research on both is still early. Your cholesterol and what you take can both help explain this result.

Low Coenzyme Q10: what it may mean

Low CoQ10 may happen with statin use, aging, heart failure and several mitochondrial conditions, where cells can struggle to make energy. Your body makes its own, and levels can fall with age. Statins can lower CoQ10 because they can act on the same pathway and lower the cholesterol that carries it. Some people may notice tiredness or muscle weakness, though these can have many other sources. Research on CoQ10 and fertility is still early and testing isn't routine, so a clinician may read this result next to your medicines and symptoms.
