What it measures

Gastrin is a hormone made in your stomach that tells it when to make acid for digestion. Levels can rise when the stomach makes too little acid or, rarely, when a growth makes too much gastrin.

Why it matters for women

Gastrin can be high when the immune system attacks the stomach lining. This makes it hard to absorb vitamin B12 and is more likely with autoimmune thyroid disease, which is common in women. Long-term use of acid-reducing medicine can also raise gastrin, so it helps your doctor to know if you take one.

You might check it if…

  • your vitamin B12 is low and a doctor is looking for why
  • you’ve had stomach ulcers that keep coming back
  • you’ve had ongoing diarrhea or heartburn without a clear cause
  • you live with autoimmune thyroid disease

What your result may mean

High Gastrin: what it may mean

High gastrin, especially a markedly high level, can point to Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare condition where a growth (gastrinoma) can make too much gastrin, or to atrophic gastritis, pernicious anemia or proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use. Pernicious anemia can make it hard to absorb vitamin B12, and it can be more frequent with autoimmune thyroid disease, which can be common in women. A recent meal or a Helicobacter pylori stomach infection can raise gastrin too. Heartburn, ulcers or diarrhea can happen, while low B12 can bring tiredness or numbness.

Low Gastrin: what it may mean

Low gastrin can be uncommon, and it may not call for any action. Surgery that removes the lower part of the stomach can lower it, since that's where most gastrin can be made. A stomach making plenty of acid can slow gastrin release, so a low reading may simply fit this normal feedback. A fasting sample can also read lower than one taken after a meal. A low level may not cause symptoms by itself, and a clinician may look into it only alongside other stomach findings.
