What it measures

Can show how much vitamin D your body has in reserve. Your skin makes vitamin D from sunlight, and you also get it from some foods.

Why it matters for women

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, which matters more as bone loss can speed up around menopause. During pregnancy it also helps build your baby’s bones and teeth. Low levels can be common, especially with little sun, darker skin, or gut conditions that limit absorption.

You might check it if…

  • you get little sun, especially in winter
  • you’ve been told your bones are thinning
  • a gut condition like celiac affects how you absorb food
  • you’re past menopause and thinking about bone health

What your result may mean

High Vitamin D: what it may mean

High vitamin D may come from taking supplements, more than from sun or food. Very high levels can cause vitamin D toxicity, which can raise blood calcium (hypercalcemia) and lead to kidney stones or calcium deposits in soft tissues. You may notice nausea, thirst, constipation, frequent urination or weakness, or you may have no symptoms. Biotin can interfere with some immunoassays too, so a clinician may review everything you take and check your calcium.

Low Vitamin D: what it may mean

Low vitamin D may point to a deficiency or insufficiency, which can be very common. It can happen with little sun, darker skin, or gut conditions that limit absorption. Over time, low levels can add to bone loss, which can matter more around menopause, and vitamin D can help build a baby's bones and teeth in pregnancy. Tiredness, low mood or muscle and bone aches may appear, and some people may feel fine. Calcium and PTH results can add to the picture.
