What it measures

ApoA1 is the main protein inside HDL, the “good” cholesterol carrier. It gives another view of your HDL, which helps move extra cholesterol out of your arteries.

Why it matters for women

Women can have higher levels than men, much like HDL. Heart risk can rise for women after menopause, and ApoA1 can add detail to a standard cholesterol check. It’s often read with ApoB, which reflects the particles that can clog arteries.

You might check it if…

  • heart disease runs in your family
  • your HDL has come back low on a cholesterol test
  • you’re past menopause and want a fuller heart picture

What your result may mean

High Apolipoprotein A1: what it may mean

High ApoA1 may be a good sign, because this main HDL protein can reflect a healthy HDL pool that helps move cholesterol out of your arteries. Estrogen can raise it, so levels can run higher in women than in men, and higher still in pregnancy or on estrogen birth control. Regular exercise can lift it a little as well. A high value can't cancel out other risks, such as high ApoB, high blood pressure or a family history of heart disease.

Low Apolipoprotein A1: what it may mean

Low ApoA1 may add to your risk of heart disease, and it can come with insulin resistance, high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia), inflammation or smoking. Your genes can play a part as well, and rare inherited conditions can push it very low. Levels can drop after menopause as estrogen falls, which may be part of why heart risk can climb then. You may feel completely well, since low ApoA1 can cause no symptoms. ApoB and blood sugar results can add to the view.
