What it measures

Glucose is the sugar in your blood and your body’s main source of energy. The test is often done after fasting and shows your level at that moment.

Why it matters for women

PCOS and diabetes that started during pregnancy can both raise your chances of developing diabetes later, and risk can rise around menopause. Diabetes can also raise heart disease risk even more in women than in men, so catching high blood sugar early is worthwhile.

You might check it if…

  • you had diabetes during a past pregnancy
  • diabetes runs in your family or you live with PCOS
  • you’re often very thirsty, tired or need to urinate a lot
  • you’re in perimenopause or past menopause

What your result may mean

High Glucose: what it may mean

High glucose can follow a recent meal, stress or illness, or it can reflect insulin resistance. A fasting value a little above the normal range may suggest prediabetes, and a higher value on repeat testing may suggest diabetes. PCOS and diabetes during pregnancy can raise your chances of high blood sugar later, and your risk can climb around menopause. Steroid medicines can raise glucose too. Some people may notice thirst, frequent urination, blurry vision or tiredness, and others may have no symptoms.

Low Glucose: what it may mean

Low glucose (hypoglycemia) can cause shakiness, sweating or confusion. It can follow a long fast, intense exercise, alcohol or diabetes medicines such as insulin. Fasting glucose can also run a little lower in pregnancy. Hunger, a racing heart or a headache can happen as well, and very low levels can be dangerous. A blood sample that sits too long before it's processed can also read lower than your true level, so a clinician may repeat the test.
