Estrone is a weaker form of estrogen. After menopause it becomes your main estrogen, made mostly in body fat from other hormones.
After menopause, your ovaries can make much less estradiol, and estrone made in body fat can take over as your main estrogen. Women with more body fat can have higher levels. Checking it can help a doctor understand your estrogen picture after menopause or on hormone therapy.
High estrone may be seen in obesity, because body fat can turn other hormones into estrone. After menopause, estrone made in body fat can take over as your main estrogen, so it may make up a larger share of your total. Estrogen hormone therapy, especially taken by mouth, and pregnancy can raise it too. A rare estrogen-making tumor can also be behind a high result. A high level may cause no symptoms, while some people may notice breast tenderness or irregular bleeding, and a clinician may read it with estradiol.
Low estrone before menopause may accompany ovarian insufficiency or hypothalamic amenorrhea, when periods can stop because of under-eating, stress or hard training. After menopause, levels can run low with low body weight, since body fat can be a main source. Aromatase inhibitors, breast cancer medicines, can lower it as well. Hot flashes, vaginal dryness or missed periods can come with low estrogen. A low result after menopause may not be a concern if you feel well.
