What it measures

Progesterone can rise after you ovulate (release an egg) to get the lining of your uterus ready for pregnancy. This version uses a more precise lab method that stays accurate at low levels standard tests can miss.

Why it matters for women

Progesterone can help show whether you’re ovulating when you’re trying to conceive or your periods are irregular, and the day you test matters. Because this version is more precise at low levels, it can help when levels are expected to be low, such as after menopause, or when a standard result is hard to read.

You might check it if…

  • you’re trying to get pregnant
  • your periods are irregular and you’re not sure you ovulate
  • a standard progesterone result was too low to read clearly
  • you’re past menopause and a doctor wants a precise level

What your result may mean

High Progesterone (LC/MS): what it may mean

High progesterone on this LC/MS test may have the same interpretation as on the standard test: you may have ovulated, it can point to pregnancy, or it may suggest hyperplasia of the ovaries or adrenal glands. This method can separate progesterone from similar hormones, so it can be less prone to some mix-ups in the lab. Progesterone in pills, creams or fertility treatment can raise your level, so a clinician may ask what you take. After menopause, when levels can be very low, even a modest rise can stand out.

Low Progesterone (LC/MS): what it may mean

Low progesterone on this test may carry the same significance as on the standard test: no ovulation that cycle (anovulation), a luteal-phase defect or a pregnancy at risk. This method can stay accurate at low levels that standard tests can miss, so it may help after menopause or on hormone therapy. A low value can also be expected before ovulation, so the day you test can change how it’s read. You may notice short cycles, spotting or irregular periods, or you may notice nothing.
