What it measures

Measures C-reactive protein (CRP), a protein your liver makes when there’s inflammation. This sensitive version picks up low, ongoing levels linked to heart and blood vessel health, and a recent cold or injury can raise it.

Why it matters for women

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women, and its warning signs are often missed. hs-CRP adds a measure of hidden inflammation to your cholesterol results, which can help refine heart risk as it can rise after menopause. Estrogen birth control can nudge it higher.

You might check it if…

  • heart disease or stroke runs in your family
  • your cholesterol is borderline and you want more context
  • you’re in perimenopause or past menopause

What your result may mean

High hs-CRP: what it may mean

High hs-CRP may point to more inflammation in the body, and for heart health it may mean a higher risk of heart attack or stroke. Very high levels may suggest an active infection or significant inflammation that may need further testing. In women, elevated hs-CRP may independently predict heart attack and stroke risk, and it can go along with PCOS, insulin resistance and autoimmune disease. A recent cold or injury can raise it, and estrogen birth control can nudge it higher, so a clinician may repeat it once you're well.

Low hs-CRP: what it may mean

Low hs-CRP may reflect minimal inflammation throughout your body and a low heart risk from inflammation. It may not call for any action on its own. A low result can't rule out heart disease, because cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking and family history can matter too. Regular movement, a whole-food diet, stress management and good sleep can help protect your heart. Statin medicines can lower hs-CRP, so a clinician may ask what you take.
