Lipase is an enzyme your pancreas makes to help you digest fat. A high level can be one of the clearest blood signs that the pancreas, an organ behind your stomach, is inflamed or irritated.
Gallstones are more common in women, and pregnancy and medicines that contain estrogen can raise the chances of getting them. Gallstones are a leading cause of pancreatitis, a painful swelling of the pancreas. Lipase is often checked together with amylase.
High lipase can be one of the most specific blood clues to pancreatic injury, such as acute pancreatitis, a blocked pancreatic duct or pancreatic trauma. Gallstones can be a leading reason for pancreatitis, and they can be more common in women, especially with pregnancy or estrogen medicines. In pregnancy, high triglycerides can play a part too. Kidney disease and alcohol can also raise lipase. With pancreatitis, you may feel severe upper belly pain reaching the back, with nausea or vomiting.
Low lipase can reflect long-term pancreas damage or cystic fibrosis, though it's rarely something a clinician can act on alone. Without symptoms, a low result may mean little. If the pancreas can't make enough digestive enzymes, some people may notice oily stools, bloating or weight loss they didn't plan. A clinician may ask about these before reading much into the number, and a stool test can look at pancreas function more directly.
