What it measures

Measures vitamin B6, which your body uses to make brain chemicals that affect mood, build red blood cells and support your immune system.

Why it matters for women

Your body needs more vitamin B6 during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Low levels can be more common with autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, where the immune system attacks the body by mistake, and these are more common in women. Too much B6 over a long time can also cause numbness or tingling.

You might check it if…

  • you’re living with rheumatoid arthritis or another autoimmune condition
  • you drink alcohol heavily or live with kidney disease
  • you notice numbness or tingling in your hands or feet

What your result may mean

High Vitamin B6: what it may mean

High B6 may mean supplement use, including B-complex vitamins, energy drinks, or products taken for PMS or morning sickness. Long-term excess can cause nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), with numbness, tingling or burning in the hands and feet, or trouble with balance. That can seem odd, because low B6 can affect nerves too. Nerve symptoms can ease once intake comes down, though recovery can take time. A clinician may review every product you take, since B6 can be in several at once.

Low Vitamin B6: what it may mean

Low B6 may happen with malabsorption, alcohol use, certain medicines or chronic disease, such as kidney disease or rheumatoid arthritis. Autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis can be more common in women, and needs can rise during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Some people may notice cracked lips, a sore tongue, a skin rash, mood changes or tiredness from anemia. Inflammation can lower plasma B6, so a low value during an illness may not match your true stores. A complete blood count can help check for anemia.
