What it measures

Measures vitamin C, which your body uses to make collagen, the protein that keeps skin and blood vessels strong. It also helps wounds heal and helps you absorb iron from plant foods.

Why it matters for women

Low iron can be common in women who have periods, especially heavy ones, and vitamin C can help your body absorb iron from plant foods. Smoking can lower vitamin C, and your needs can go up during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

You might check it if…

  • you smoke or are often around secondhand smoke
  • you eat few fruits and vegetables
  • you bruise easily or your gums bleed
  • a gut condition affects how you absorb food

What your result may mean

High Vitamin C: what it may mean

High vitamin C may mean recent supplements, and it may be well tolerated. Very high doses can cause stomach upset or diarrhea, and they can raise the risk of kidney stones in some people. A recent IV vitamin C infusion, fruit juice or fizzy vitamin tablet can also lift the number. Very large doses can throw off some other lab tests, so a clinician may want to know the timing. Blood levels can settle quickly, because the kidneys can clear the extra.

Low Vitamin C: what it may mean

Low vitamin C may impair collagen, immune function and antioxidant defense, and severe deficiency can cause scurvy. It can happen with smoking, a limited diet, heavy alcohol use or gut conditions, and needs can go up during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Some people may notice easy bruising, bleeding gums, tiredness, slow wound healing or joint pain. Vitamin C can help you absorb iron from plant foods, so a low level can matter if heavy periods have also lowered iron. Sample handling can sway this test, because vitamin C can break down quickly.
