Your lab order arrives by email. Most Quest locations take walk-ins, so bring it with a photo ID.
Blasts are the earliest, most immature blood cells. They normally stay inside your bone marrow, the soft tissue in your bones where blood cells are made, so none are expected in your blood.
None is the expected result for women and men alike. Blasts in the blood are uncommon, but they can be a sign that your bone marrow isn’t making blood cells normally. Any found are worth talking through with your clinician soon.
Any blasts in the blood may be abnormal and can point to a serious bone marrow disorder such as leukemia, so prompt review by a blood specialist (hematologist) may be needed. This percentage can come from a hand count on a blood smear, where a lab specialist can look at each cell. The share of blasts can help a clinician decide what further testing, such as a bone marrow exam, may be needed. Less frequently, a few can appear with marrow recovery after chemotherapy or severe infection. Easy bruising, fevers, bleeding or tiredness can come along with it.
Low or zero blasts may be the normal, expected result for women and men alike. Blasts are the earliest blood cells, and they can stay in the bone marrow, where they can grow into red cells, white cells or platelets. This line alone may not need any follow-up, and it can stay at zero through normal life changes such as pregnancy. It can't rule out a marrow problem by itself, though, so the rest of your blood count can still matter.
