What it measures

Globulins are a group of proteins in your blood. They include antibodies, which your immune system makes to fight germs, and proteins that carry hormones, iron and other things around your body.

Why it matters for women

Autoimmune conditions, where the immune system attacks the body by mistake, are much more common in women, and some, such as lupus, can raise globulin levels. Long-lasting infections or inflammation can raise them too. Low levels can point to a weaker immune defense or to protein being lost through the kidneys or gut.

You might check it if…

  • a doctor mentioned lupus or another autoimmune condition
  • you get infections often or they’re slow to clear
  • you’ve had joint pain, rashes or ongoing dry eyes and mouth
  • your total protein result was high or low

What your result may mean

High Globulin: what it may mean

High globulins can occur with long-lasting infection or inflammation, autoimmune disease or blood disorders such as multiple myeloma. Autoimmune conditions can be much more common in women, and some, such as lupus, can raise globulin levels. Long-term liver disease can raise them too. Because this number can be worked out from total protein minus albumin, dehydration may sway it. Tiredness can happen, or there may be no symptoms, so a clinician may order a protein test (serum protein electrophoresis) to see which globulins are high.

Low Globulin: what it may mean

Low globulins can point to an immune deficiency or protein loss through the kidneys or gut. Because this group includes antibodies, some people may get more infections than expected. Steroids and other medicines that calm the immune system can lower them too. When protein is being lost, swelling in the legs or belly can appear. A clinician may check antibody (immunoglobulin) levels or a urine protein test to find out why.
