Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, is a stronger form of testosterone that your body makes mainly in your skin and hair roots. It affects hair growth and the oil in your skin.
DHT can play a part in thinning hair on the top of the scalp, extra facial or body hair, and acne. But many women with these concerns have normal blood levels, partly because DHT mostly works inside the skin itself. Doctors usually read it alongside testosterone and other hormones.
High dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in women may play a part in thinning scalp hair (androgenic alopecia), extra facial or body hair (hirsutism) and acne. In men, it can be linked to an enlarged prostate (BPH) and pattern baldness. It can rise with PCOS or other sources of extra androgens, and testosterone use can raise it too. Many women with these concerns can have normal blood levels, partly because DHT can act mostly inside the skin. A clinician may read it alongside testosterone and other hormones.
Low DHT may occur with 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor use, such as finasteride or dutasteride, medicines that can block the enzyme that makes DHT. It can also come from a rare congenital 5-alpha-reductase deficiency. Since your body makes DHT from testosterone, low testosterone can bring DHT down too. In women, a low result may not be a concern on its own, and it may cause no clear symptoms. A clinician may compare it with total testosterone to get a fuller picture.
