What it measures

Here, estradiol, the main form of estrogen, is measured with a more precise lab method. It can read the very low levels that standard estradiol tests may miss.

Why it matters for women

After menopause, estrogen can naturally be very low, and standard tests may not measure it accurately. This version can help when a doctor needs an exact low reading, such as after menopause, with low-dose hormone therapy, or with certain breast cancer medicines that can lower estrogen.

You might check it if…

  • you’re past menopause and a doctor wants a precise estrogen level
  • you take a breast cancer medicine that lowers estrogen
  • you use low-dose hormone therapy
  • a standard estradiol result came back too low to read

What your result may mean

High Estradiol, ultrasensitive: what it may mean

High ultrasensitive estradiol may carry the same significance as a high standard estradiol, but this test can pick up changes at the very low end of the range. After menopause, a higher-than-expected level may come from hormone therapy, supplements or estrogen made in body fat. In rare cases, an estrogen-making tumor can be the reason. For people on aromatase inhibitors, breast cancer medicines that can lower estrogen, a level above what’s expected can be something to review with the care team. Bleeding after menopause or breast tenderness may prompt a closer look.

Low Estradiol, ultrasensitive: what it may mean

Low ultrasensitive estradiol may be expected after menopause and with aromatase inhibitors. Low values can matter more on this test, which can be used to check estrogen status in menopause, in men or in children, where standard tests can fall short. In younger women, a low level may point to ovarian insufficiency. Hot flashes, vaginal dryness or weaker bones can go along with very low estrogen. Because lab methods differ, a result from this test may not match an earlier standard estradiol.
